Penn State’s Sustainability Institute seeks a highly self-motivated, organized, and action-oriented individual to coordinate student-centered programs, activities, and services for the Sustainability Institute (SI). The Student Programs Manager (SPM) will work with various internal and external partners to promote the concept and practice of sustainability to students. The position serves as a resource for Penn State campuses and locations across the Commonwealth.

The SPM will lead and support efforts to engage students in sustainable behaviors, involve them in on and off-campus sustainability projects and advance their literacy and meaningful engagement with sustainability. Located in the Sustainability Institute, the SPM will also have a primary contact person in Student Affairs with whom she/he will collaborate on joint initiatives.

The SPM is focused primarily on Penn State students’ co-curricular experience but also works closely with SI colleagues responsible for curriculum and faculty development, community engagement, employee engagement, and academic-operations partnerships. Outside of SI, the SPM will collaborate with leadership and staff in many Penn State units such as: Student Affairs, Educational Equity, Global Programs, Housing and Food Services, the Office of Physical Plant, and faculty members in various academic colleges and departments. Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The successful candidate will have a proven ability to develop, plan and manage large-scale projects and programs. She/he will also have experience in budget management and program evaluation. Also, she/he must have experience developing the leadership capacity of others thru education, facilitation, team development, and mentoring. It is important that the successful candidate have a comprehensive understanding of sustainability which includes issues surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. The new SPM must have proven experience, skill, and ability to work with and engage a wide variety of students including multicultural student groups and international students.
