VPIRG Field Organizing Internship for Spring Semester – Deadline: Jan. 4

We believe that we have a responsibility to take bold action on climate change to protect our local economies, our homes, and our future…if you agree, join the campaign and apply today to be a VPIRG intern for spring 2015!

The Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG) is Vermont’s largest grassroots environmental and consumer protection advocacy organization. Since a group of UVM students founded VPIRG over 40 years ago, our mission has been to stand up and speak out for Vermont’s people, environment and economy.

We’re looking for dedicated and passionate college students to help us inform and mobilize Vermont citizens and students on some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. Vermonters are already experiencing the wrath of climate change, and we know it’s not going away anytime soon.  But as the threat rises, so has momentum for action.

That’s why we launched Energy Independent Vermont, a growing coalition dedicated to putting a price on carbon pollution in our state. A state level carbon pollution tax will not only hold fossil fuel companies accountable for the pollution they’ve been dumping for free, but according to a recent economic study it will actually save Vermonters money by increasing efficiency, facilitating the switch to clean energy, and creating jobs.

Interns will help educate citizens and fellow students through events and outreach, build grassroots support for the policy, and even have the opportunity to participate in major actions at Vermont’s capitol in Montpelier.

As a VPIRG intern you will:

  • Attend briefings and trainings to gain important citizenship, leadership and organizing skills
  • Work directly with a VPIRG organizer
  • Experience a crash course in grassroots organizing and advocacy
  • Bolster your professional portfolio by gaining valuable skills for careers in non-profit, environmental and advocacy fields

This is an unpaid, 10-15 hour/week internship out of our Burlington office. You may be eligible to earn academic credit for your work, and there are also potential opportunities to continue working on this campaign during the summer in a full time, paid position.

TO APPLY: Please submit a cover letter that includes your specific issue/policy interests, resume, references and a writing sample where you’re advocating for a particular point of view to Kati Gallagher, VPIRG Campus Organizer, at students@vpirg.org by Sunday, January 4th.
