Paid Internship Opportunity with the VT Urban & Community Forestry Program

CALL FOR INTERNSHIP APPLICANTS

The Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program (VT UCF) is a joint program of the VT Department of Forests, Parks, & Recreation and UVM Extension. Our mission is to lead citizens, businesses, and governments in understanding the value of urban and community forests and promote civic responsibility for and participation in the stewardship of these resources for this and future generations.
This fall we are seeking an intern to assist in a number of specific projects and to increase our capacity to assist communities. This internship is paid and includes an additional stipend for self-designed professional development.

Timeline: September – December 2014 (with a possibility to extend into the spring semester)
Location: based in Burlington; some travel required
Commitment: 5-10 hours/week, flexible based on intern availability and work load

Compensation: $10/hour that will come in the form of a stipend; includes an additional stipend specifically for professional development
Internship Description

VT UCF team seeks a fall intern to provide general program support and to work on a number of specific projects, including:

  • Street and park tree inventories,
  • Assessment of tree inventory data and urban tree canopy cover,
  • Contributing to inventory reports and urban forest management plans,
  • Vermont Tree Stewards Conference coordination, and
  • Development and launch of the new VT UCF website,

 

This is a multidisciplinary and multifaceted internship and our ideal candidate will be eager to gain experience supporting a variety of the components that make a community-oriented environmental organization successful. Additional ideal qualifications include:

  • A driven and responsible individual who is eager and able to take on a diverse set of tasks and complete them independently
  • Attention to detail; efficient and effective organization skills
  • Effective communication skills, particularly writing
  • A self-directed individual who is willing to ask questions and wants to be successful in even the smallest task
  • Tree identification experience and knowledge of tree biology and physiology
  • A demonstrated passion for natural resources, stewardship, and some familiarity with the field of urban forestry
  • Willingness to use a personal computer and work remotely (not at an office)
  • Access to personal transportation
