VSAC/ Gear Up (Burlington, VT): Work to improve the educational outcomes with low income students in Vermont. This VISTA will help design sustainable programming that supports students at the Community College of Vermont in their transition to college and continuation through second year. Working autonomously and understanding the nuances of college culture, social and academic adjustment, and growing independence is required. The position will be housed at VSAC (Vermont Student Assistance Corporation – a non-profit organization that provides educational resources for higher education and financial aid) and will focus on identified GEAR UP students enrolled at CCV. This position is designed to work collaboratively with GEAR UP staff, Community College staff, and other community partners to identify needs of first year students and to connect them to resources and/or design new interventions to promote success. Experience and/or interest in education, advising, social justice and/or social marketing is desirable.

Green Mountain College (Poultney, VT): The Lead Community Development Mentor will help Green Mountain College build the social and economic capital of the region. They will coordinate targeted mentoring efforts for elementary, high school, and on-campus students. These efforts will primarily be geared toward financially disadvantaged students and the content of the mentoring will primarily address financial literacy and college planning through topics such as educational goal setting, time management, college preparation, and financial planning, including navigation through student loans, scholarships, and work-study options. Off-campus efforts will cover the southern Vermont region, with a special focus on nearby Fair Haven Union High School, Poultney High School and Rutland High School.

Vermont Campus Compact ACCESS and Success VISTA (Colchester, VT): The Access & Success VISTA at Vermont Campus Compact will support VCC in our efforts to improve college aspirations, access, and success for low-income students. The VISTA will design and implement a program to offer “College Positive Volunteerism” training to mentoring and K-12 outreach programs at member campuses, with the goal of offering at least 8 on-campus trainings in the 2014-2015 academic year. In addition, the VISTA member will work with the VCC network to do an assessment of current campus initiatives that utilize community engagement as a strategy for promoting the success of at-risk college students. The VISTA will also support other central programming related to access and success in the VCC Office and contribute to VCC communications and social marketing efforts.

Bridport Central School Higher Education and Career Liaison (Bridport/Middlebury, VT): The VISTA will collaborate at Bridport Central School, in concert with current staff, to support students and families towards their continued growth and aspirations for lifelong learning. BCS is a rural elementary school, with 67% of students receiving free and reduced lunch. In partnership with Middlebury College and higher education institutions in New England, this VISTA will serve as a liaison between families and school to increase parental and community engagement as it relates to the pursuit of education beyond high school. This includes continuing the match with each classroom and a “host” university, supporting a career field/theme at each grade level, and improving communication systems between families/schools/community, and well as keeping data on participation rates and growth outcomes. This VISTA will be part of a pivotal shift in community pedagogy and changing self-awareness that increases confidence, showing what is possible for each student beyond high school!
